Last week I was invited to go see the international hit show Boys in the Band. The show is currently running at the Mandela Theatre in Joburg Theatre, and it was oodles of fun. I got to relive the past 5 decades in boy band music which was a treat, who wasn’t into them back in the day!? And they are certainly making a comeback in mainstream music.
Boys in the Band is an all Australian group of male performers who started out showcasing their show in cruise liners, and now it’s a full on world tour which is doing quite well. I love how they did their performances based on the decades each band was in and the story behind that particular band. The covered hit songs by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Jackson 5, The Bee Gees and the Backstreet Boys. As much as I didn’t know much about the older bands, I definitely knew their songs, either from dad’s record collection or from remakes by other artists. That aspect made it quite fun to be like… “Oh, I know this. Who is Frankie Valli?! Fun!” Nice little musical history lesson. The older people in the crowd were jamming to everything as the youngens looked on. Then it switched up when we got to the 80s and 90s. My favourite performances were the songs from the Jackson 5. Nothing like some MJ to get you tapping your feet and swinging the shoulders.
All I knew about the show is that they were performing all these songs, but was happily surprised by all the effort of the staging, the band, the choreography, the singing and of course how hot they all were. Let’s not pretend like that doesn’t matter… My interest level was at an all-time high! The one guy was working it so hard he was soaked in sweat by the end of the show. Dedication right there!
If you love live singing, old-old school and not-so-new school songs you will definitely enjoy this show. There are only 6 more shows left, so shimmy on over to www.joburgtheatre.com and get yourself into the groove with Boy in the Band SA.
What’s your favourite boy band song?
