Channel O was generous enough to bring its viewers the live broadcast of the 56th Grammy Awards on Monday, January 27 at 03h00 CAT, and the unpredictable wins and snubs made it a mesh of oddities and cursing. The awards ceremony opened with an underwhelming performance by the music industry’s power couple Jay Z and Beyonce’s latest single, Drunk In Love, if you couple that with the hype heightened around social media, it did fall flat on her maximus gluteus.
But the performance that had me bopping my head and believing I was a Hip Hop head was Kendrick “he who was snubbed X7” Lamar and Imagine Dragon’s collaboration of M.A.A.D City and Radioactive respectively, which even had the lovely Miss Swift breaking it down in the front row in her gorgeous Gucci gown.
The public however were in serious outrage when Macklemore snubbed not only the Best New Artist from the favourite (Lamar) to win, but also took the nod at Best Rap Album, stirring the pot of whether Hip Hop should remain being ghettoized with wins of black artists in Hip Hop and whether the event was just a popularity contest.
Coming back to our beloved country and not being distracted by American shenanigans, we cannot talk about the entertainment industry and the way it’s begun without mentioning our very own Bonang Matheba. It’s only a few weeks into the year and our darling has already thrust her way through 2014 with Distraction by Bonang, a luxury lingerie range in collaboration with Woolworths which has been in talks and production about 14 months ago says the self-proclaimed “Queen of Everything”.
The range includes brassiers, body suits and full slips and, according to Bonang, “Bonang for Distractions is the perfect gift for your Valentine’s” and I’m sure the ladies wouldn’t mind distracting their partners with some sexy lingerie. And, in continuing with the trend of South African royalty, former Miss South African Jo-Ann Held (formerly Strauss) has been appointed as Director of Media24. “Jo-Ann is a media entrepreneur who, among others, presents and has produced her own prime time TV show.
She also has several corporate enterprises and is a director of Partnership Investments, a company with interests in media, mining and property.” is what the company (Media 24) stated in a press release when the beauty with brains came on board. This proves yet that a beauty with brains is one tough formidable package to beat.
Arguably the best new artist to thrust through 2013 with the hit single ‘Gusheshe’ featuring Okmalumkoolkat, Cassper Nyovest is the illest kid on the music scene right now. The 4X SA Hip Hop award winner also released yet another hit single early this year and it’s a favourite with the masses called ‘Doc Shebeleza’, and with his hit after hit success, can South Africa expect an album from his fountain of hit singles? Well we hope so and are crossing fingers that he’s not just another hitmaker who’ll vanish into thin music air.
