One could say I hate summer as my wardrobe is mostly made for winter. So while those Europeans and Americans enjoy the last bit of warm weather let me present to you the essentials. June 21 marked the Summer solstice which marks the beginning of summer. Gents, if you’re like me and have a hard time putting together your summer look and find it stressful going from chunky layered clothes to minimum wear and the first thought you had was, “What’s going to be in my summer wardrobe?!”. Then look no further as, I’ve compiled a list of summer essentials that you may not want to go a day without.
1. THE FEDORA IF NOT THE PANAMA HAT
The fedora has been making a steady comeback in past years. We’ve seen it being donned by those fashionable men at fashion shows and the likes of Don Draper in Mad Men have helped reignite its sense of cool. It’s a great piece for headwear for keeping your scalp and hair out of the sun and its harmful UV rays. The great thing is that fedoras are now coming with floral prints and they look great. If the fedora isn’t your thing, go for the Panama hat which is a brimmed straw hat. Conclusion: Both are great.
2. FACE FITTING FRAMES
Sunglasses are your best friend if they fit your face properly and yes, sometimes a big pair of shades is what an outfit needs but trust me when I say fit is better. Now I know that we all can’t afford Ray-Bans,Triwa or Oliver Peoples shades so give those guys at Mr Price a shout and they’ll hook you up. Have at least 3 different shades in different tones and design.
3. LINEN, YOUR BEST FRIEND
Linen is a lightweight cotton fabric that won’t leave you hot and bothered. If you are skeptical and unsure about it try it out with your shirts before moving on to pants. Their faded tones are great and they scream “SUMMMER!!!”
4. SHORT-SLEEVED SHIRTS ARE UNDERDOGS BUT KEEP THEM CLOSE
This has to be the most forgotten item in the hot summer months, I myself would prefer being in a Polo shirt but over the years these bad boys have found a niche in my wardrobe. The thing with short-sleeved shirts is that the primary focus is on the sleeves, shoulders and chest. Sleeves should be around the mid-bicep area and should fit you without being too tight around your chest and fit well across the shoulders. Pick up a couple of them in bright summer colors and prints and patterns and you are good to go.
5. NATO Strap > Leather Band
Watch straps are overlooked when it comes to wrist wear but not this time. More men are now ditching their brown or black leather straps in favor of the NATO strap (hello Daniel Wellington) as it ties in the whole summer look and still screams “classy”. Make the smart choice and consider ditching the leather my friend.
6. SWIM TRUNKS ARE THE FUTURE.
Now, this may come as a surprise to you but swim trunks are going to be in your face this summer whether you like it or not (don’t say I didn’t tell you). They make good wear if I must say so myself and like every other summer clothing, prints and patterns are guaranteed. Wear them with a V-neck or funky vests that shouts “I LOVE SUMMER”, heck if you have been working out wear nothing and show those abs, some girls will love you for it if that’s their cup of tea.
7.TRADE IN THOSE DESERT/HUNTER BOOTS AND BROGUES FOR ESPADRILLES
Hunter boots are great, we can’t deny that but so too are brogues which just fit in with every outfit but if you’re looking for shoes that give you a beach feel and no, I’m not talking Crocs or Flip-Flops, try espadrilles. They’re effortless and easy to put on and the upside of these shoes is that they come with a variety of styles and prints all depending on the maker.
So we have the fedora/Panama hat up for headwear. Frames to give you the cool factor like you don’t care about anything or anyone. Linen /Short-sleeved shirt to tie up your top half of your body in summer hues. The NATO strap to give your wrist style. Swim trunks that will have your beach vibe in control. And espadrilles for floating around like the man on the moon.
