The official launch of 11th annual FNB Varsity Cup 2018 kicked off at the FNB Conference Centre in Sandown, that gathered participating teams, coaches, captains and the proud sponsor Steers on the 23rd of January 2018. The event ushered in what promises to be an exciting season of rugby action and officially introduced the 9 universities who will be competing for the top prize at this year’s tournament.
Steers has been a passionate supporter of Varsity Sports, and for its second year the brand has thrown its weight behind Varsity Cup through their continued commitment to developing and growing university sport. Their aim of the sponsorship is to fulfil a role that ignites excitement around the fans of the competing teams. The brand intends to add a real flame by bringing an element of surprise to the spectators present at the games. This will be highlighted through a number of activations at venues across the country that will include a halftime build your own life-size burger activation as well as competitions for fans and spectators which will be run on social media and student radio stations.
The captains of each of the participating teams showcased the kits of their respected teams, match fixtures and structural elements of what is to come in the tournament were shared.“Innovation has been driving the success of the FNB Varsity Cup and this year we’re doing it again,” says Duitser Bosman, CEO of the FNB Varsity Cup.

Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby added that, “FNB Varsity Cup matches continue to attract massive in-stadium and television crowds, and through this, many professional rugby careers have been launched. Many of the players go on to represent at the various provincial rugby unions, displaying their competitive, uncompromising, attacking and running rugby skills.
The tournament will run for the next three months kicking off on Monday 29th of January 2018. The first match of the season will see defending champions, FNB UP-Tuks play host to FNB Shimlas at 16h45 at Tuks Stadium while FNB Maties will travel to UJ Stadium where they will open their campaign against FNB UJ at 19h00. Both these matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
