Located between the most beauteous points of Suncoast Casino, the official opening of the Billy G restaurant was certainly the Crème de la Crème of restaurant openings in Durban which took place on the 6th of March 2018. Filled with media personalities, anticipating guests and ‘foodies’ all eagerly waiting to indulge in every single gourmet dish the restaurant has to offer, the food and mood was definitely the star of the evening for attendees.
As you enter the place you are welcomed by a magnificent 320 seater setting, an attractive colour scheme throughout the vicinity and a taste of modernity. The inner middle area offers patrons a wonderful view of the workshop- like kitchen where you can see the restaurants Sous chefs work their culinary magic in the kitchen.
By 18:30pm, the outer area of the restaurant which is surrounded by the attractive promenade and Suncoast beach area offered guests a relaxing outlook of the restaurant. With welcoming cocktails on deck and warm hospitality from the waitrons, the preparation behind the opening was of excellent standard and stellar taste.
Speaking to Marketing Manager of Suncoast Casino, Louise Howell on expectations, top favourite dishes as well as future endeavours at Billy G’s she said, “From a personal experience it was a lot of hard work. I had to taste a lot of dishes and give a lot of feedback until they reached perfection and that was my contribution.
“Billy G’s is a Tsogo Sun owned concept which actually came from our food and beverage department. The restaurant is named after the late Doctor Billy Gallagher who contributed over thirty years to the food and beverage industry in South Africa and it’s really developed from him and his legacy,” says Howell.
“This Billy G’s is the fifth branch in South Africa all within Tsogo Sun, the first one opened in Montecasino in 2010 and our food and beverage department actually ran with this concept and own it themselves. We have restaurant managers, sous chefs and over 15 waitrons all servicing guests within the restaurant,” she explains.
When asked about her top five favourite dishes, the statement immediately changed to her top one. “My top one dish is definitely the Butter Chicken, I love Curry. I’ve heard people raving about the pizzas so I think it’s something definitely worth trying, the carveries are also a household favourite and the sushis are fairly flattened tonight but I think there’s nothing quite like coming to Durban and eating at Suncoast and having Butter Chicken with some Poppadums,” she says.
The menu offers a wide variety of mouth- watering plat du jour (dishes) ranging from Vegan dishes for the health conscious and Roasts for all the Carnivore lovers. Guests seemed pleased and showcased gratuity in a form of empty plates. The Thai- Noodle Salad and the Prawn Californian Roll are certain must try’s for future patrons but as the invitation indicated on the evening, guests ‘arrive hungry’ and by the look on everyone’s plates it was the order of the evening.
With a reasonable price point ranging from: R199 (Adults) to discount prices for children and pensioners, Billy G’s truly lives up to its tagline that, “If it’s not a full plate, you not doing it right”.
An amazing ambience to say the least, a lovely musical act to serenade guests, jaw-dropping food selections and exceptional catering skills from both Sous chefs to staff members not forgetting gift bags- courtesy of Tsogo Sun, Billy G’s has deservingly left the mouths of people talking for all the right reasons.
