Former Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates player Bheka Phakathi has passed away following a fatal car accident on Sunday morning.

The former centre-back was on the verge to take the KwaZulu-Natal ABC Motsepe League side Umvoti Football Club to the National First Division after successfully secured a booking to the playoffs.

The 43-year-old established himself in the Premier Soccer League as an experienced defender at Golden Arrows and subsequently made a move to Orlando Pirates.

Phakathi enjoyed another stint with Abafana Besthende in addition to plying his trade for Maritzburg United before calling it quits in 2010.

Phakathi was an assistant coach to Muhsin Ertugral, Manqoba Mngqithi, Shaun Bartlett, Mark Harrison and Ernst Middendorp at Arrows from 2011-15.

He formed part of the coaching staff that helped clinch Arrows’ return to the Absa Premiership during the 2014-15 season.

Condolences keep pouring in to the Phakathi family, friends and fans as the whole South Africa has lost a legend not only in playing but also in grooming the future starts.
