Joslyn Mcdonald, a Durban based fashion designer specializing in ladies evening and bridal wear, completed her studies at Durban University of Technology in 2015.

“Fashion design is something that I have always been interested in and I have grown to love even more. I learnt in my final year that it was evening wear that I was drawn to”.

After completing her diploma in fashion design and textiles, she started her own business from home. She designs and makes bridal and evening wear for women who are confident and comfortable in their own skin. Her work has been showcased at the DUT 3rd year fashion show. She was also a top 25 contestant in the Durban July fashion challenge in 2014 and one of the top 10 designers for the Durban July fashion challenge 2016.

Joslyn has been married for 3 years and has a little baby boy named Parker, who’s just over a year. She shares her journey of motherhood and the impact it has made on her and her career.

After getting married and having Parker, what was the change like in your career? Getting married and having Parker has changed my world, apart from having my own little human to love and be responsible for, I have just been more motivated and driven to do what I have to, work wise, so I can provide in doing. I have also learnt to implement time management to fulfill the role of being a mom, wife and business owner, being self-employed and working from home requires discipline and self-motivation.

What is your schedule like being a designer, wife and mother? I have had to start my days earlier, end them later and get a lot more done in between just to fit in time with my family, see to work and fit clients in, as well as cook and try and find time to myself.

How often does Parker change work days/plans? Parker hardly ever changes my work days. I am fortunate enough to have my mother who is a stay at home mum, she comes over to us every day to take care of Parker. I also have an advantage of working from home; this allows me to be flexible.

Have you missed any meaningful occasions in Parker’s life for work? No I haven’t missed any meaningful occasions and I will try my hardest not to.

What kind of work sacrifices have you made since being a mother? I have had to put some of my short term goals on hold to accommodate our baby boy. When you become a mother, it changes your whole world and things that you prioritized before, especially financially has to be re prioritized. I am in the process of growing my own business, with the help of my husband, so when the baby was coming we had to focus on what he needed first.

Do you take time out for yourself and what do you do during that time? I hardly ever take time out for myself, anytime that I get off is usually with my family. At the moment that is the only free time available to me as I’m a new mom and I’m happy with that, time to myself will eventually come.

These days we call mothers ‘supermoms’ because they have careers while having a family, would you call yourself supermom and what does it take to be a supermom? I believe it takes courage, patience and endurance. I run a business, household and my family, it’s not easy having to work, cook, see to your baby, make time for your hubby and see that you still look good!! As mothers we love with all we have, we get the job done, and we never expect anything in return, so yes I definitely consider myself a supermom.

Do you have any advice for expecting mothers or newly mothers with a career, since you’re a fairly new mother as well? You can never prepare enough for a baby. They come in and re arrange your routine. It’s extremely draining but so worth it. Having a good support structure is important. I am fortunate enough to have a very supportive husband. We chose to have a natural water birth and we took antenatal classes, which was the best thing we could have done. It didn’t only prepare me for the day of birth but also got my husband informed on his role as a dad when the baby came. Be patient, spend as much time with your baby, you will never get those moments back.

‘My journey has only begun, every day I grow and I learn about my craft, being a mother and a wife.’
