Nonzwakazi (Siphokazi Maphumulo) is a Durban-based Afro-pop singer who has just released two singles: the motivational“Phakama Mbokodo” and the rhythmic “Igugu Lam”
Coming from a classical, opera and choral music background, she is determined that her solo career will make her reach for the stars.
Nonzwakazi completed her Honours Degree in Industrial Psychology at the University of KwaZulu Natal (Howard College Campus). Her versatility sets her apart from many other artists. She has done professional theatre productions, public and private performances, and formal events with the famous KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra (KZNPO).
Nonzwakazi is popularly known as a member of the well-known Clermont Choir. She has been a member for 8 years. Her charismatic performances with the choir have propelled her to grow as a solo artist.
One of the professional stage productions she has been cast for is La Boheme – which is an opera composed by G. Puccini. It was staged at the Playhouse Opera Theatre in August 2017. Nonzwakazi played the role of Musetta. The production was successful, and the audience loved her colourful personality. Another Zulu production, which was staged at the University of KwaZulu Natal in titled Uqomisa Iliba. She was cast as MaMthombeni (a wife to Ngqengelele). Mamthombeni’s scenes portrayed how patriarchy affected women in the past. Nonzwakazi touched the audience with her display of helplessness on stage. It was this role that gave her an idea of composing “Phakama Mbokodo.”
